Appium
STEP BY STEP

Get started with Appium Android & iOS + TestZombie

Choose your mobile platform. Android and iOS have separate GitHub examples with prepared hybrid apps and Java tests.

Appium Android: your first test

Prerequisites: Java 17+, Maven, Appium with UiAutomator2, Android SDK/ADB and an emulator or device. The example APK is included in the repository.

01

Clone Android example

The repository contains the TestZombie demo APK and tests.

git clone https://github.com/testzombie/testzombie-example-appium-android.git
cd testzombie-example-appium-android
02

Start the Appium server

The hybrid demo switches between NATIVE_APP and WEBVIEW, which requires a compatible ChromeDriver.

appium driver install uiautomator2
appium server --allow-insecure uiautomator2:chromedriver_autodownload
03

Run tests in a second terminal

Pass your TestZombie credentials to Maven. The example also supports environment variables.

mvn test -Dtestzombie.apikey=YOUR_API_KEY -Dtestzombie.email=YOUR_EMAIL

cd testzombie-example-appium-ios
02

Prepare simulator and start Appium

Start an iOS simulator through Xcode and the Appium server in one terminal.

appium driver install xcuitest
appium server
03

Run tests in a second terminal

Use your API key and account email.

mvn test -Dtestzombie.apikey=YOUR_API_KEY -Dtestzombie.email=YOUR_EMAIL

Already using Appium?

Both platforms use the Java library from Maven Central. In each GitHub repository, AppiumTestBase shows how to configure credentials and create the driver centrally.

<dependency>
  <groupId>com.testzombie</groupId>
  <artifactId>testzombie-lib-java</artifactId>
  <version>1.2.0</version>
</dependency>

If your first run does not work

Connection failed?

Check the API key, account email and network access to the TestZombie API.

No healing shown?

A normal test can succeed without healing. Try the mutation levels described in the repository to see healing in action.

Want to update source code?

Source updates are optional. Start with preview and review changes before applying them.

First run completed. What next?

You can inspect test runs and healing logs in your dashboard. TestZombie may repair a broken locator; real application failures still fail. Successful locator fixes can optionally be reviewed and applied as source updates.
